Guild To Host Second Annual Brave Exhibit And Auction

Across the continent, over 80% of girls enroll in grade one, but by the time they reach university, only 6% are successful in continuing their tertiary education.   BRAVE is changing this.  BRAVE creates opportunities for girls living in some of the most dangerous communities across the African continent to complete their education and become effective, ethical leaders, modern-day adventurers, and advocates for themselves and others.

Following the overwhelming success of the inaugural BRAVE dinner and exhibit in July 2016 , GUILD is generously hosting the second annual BRAVE exhibit and auction at their flagship gallery in the Silo District in Cape Town.   On Thursday, 23 November, invited guests will be treated to live music, very special canapés and cocktails by Spice Route, followed by enthralling stories from extraordinary women explorers, leaders, and adventurers, including two of the all-female Black Mamba anti-poaching team, a poem by acclaimed artist Justine Mahoney, lead Singita guide Margaux Le Rous, and Rock Girl spoken word poet Miche Williams.  These young women are all resilient leaders, paving the way for the next generation of girl leaders.

At the auction, artists and designers, along with luminaries from across South Africa, will come together to raise funds for scholarships for the very first young women to enrol in the ALU School of Wildlife Conservation, and to support the fifth Rock Girl Road Trip.  At the event, the first ever BRAVE mobile studio will be on hand and a BRAVE award will be distributed to a woman or girl who lives the mission of BRAVE, to build a just, equal and safe society.

Once again, the auction will feature one-of-a-kind pieces created by well-known artists and designers, including a BRAVE cuff by Kirsten Goss, a BRAVE mosaic bench by Lovell Friedman, a BRAVE limited edition bench by Laurie Wiid van Heerden of WiiD design and Ceramic Matters, an exclusive BRAVE ceramic table by Ceramic Matters and WiiD, a custom BRAVE knife and knife making course from Conrad Hicks, specially-designed tables by Anthony Shapiro and Rock Girls, bespoke safaris from Wilderness Safaris and Singita, and weekends at four Perfect Hideaways retreat.  Adventure experiences offered include an adventure day with an Escape+Explore guide and Rock Girl intern and a surf day with Waves for Change on a custom Mami Wata surfboard, which you can take home.  In addition, a BRAVE pop-up shop will offer limited-edition bracelets, T-shirts, BRAVE unisex scent, handmade BRAVE bowls, and other items.

GUILD is the most significant gallery for high-end contemporary, limited-edition design in South Africa, and is also devoted to creating a safe environment for its team and for those artists and designers in its stable.  BRAVE is honoured to partner with the gallery.

This year’s BRAVE event comes at a unique moment, coinciding with the unprecedented mobilization of millions of girls and women, and people around the world behind #MeToo and other local and global movements to speak out against sexual harassment and assault, something that BRAVE has been doing since our inception in 2010.  This year’s event is also taking place on the eve of 16 Days of Activism against Gender-based Violence – an important marker for us this year as our girls are celebrating the one year anniversary of writing weekly column for the Cape Times that began last 25 November on the even of the 16 Days campaign.

BRAVE award winner and UN Women head Phumzile Mlambo-Ngucka has said tha “Everyone has the right to live their life without violence or the threat of violence. This holds for all people, no matter what their gender, age, race, religion, ethnicity or caste, and irrespective of their income level, sexual orientation, HIV status, citizenship, where they live, or any other characteristic of their identity.”

Violence not only has negative consequences for those who suffer it, but also for their families, the community and society at large, and it comes at a high economic cost for society.  Every one of us has been a victim or knows someone who has been a victim of violence – and this isn’t normal.  BRAVE believes that violence is not inevitable—violence against women and girls doesn’t have to be the status quo, as it is for most of the girls BRAVE works with.

Like many of the African animals that we all hold dear, and that our girls often see for the first time on our BRAVE Road Trips, African girls today in 2017 are threatened by horrific violence.   The girls can relate to the experiences of endangered cheetahs, rhinos and elephants we see.   One in three girls around the world has experienced sexual or physical violence.  The girls on our Road Trips feel a connection to the animals – they also feel endangered.  .But the girls’ experiences as explorers in their own country – meeting other girls far off the beaten path, questioning Constitutional Court judges, learning about our earliest ancestors at the Cradle of Humankind, dancing under Venus as the moon rises in the Madikwe Game Reserve, interviewing girls in the mining communities around Rustenberg where one in five girls have been raped – these interactions make them stronger, more resilient, and more determined to ensure that we are all safe – girls, our treasured African wildlife, and everyone.

In 2018, we are focusing on the crisis facing both our African wildlife and our girls by raising funds for girls to attend the African Leadership University School of Wildlife Conservation.  We need women leaders in conservation not only to save our endangered rhinos and elephants, we need girls equipped with the business, management, diplomatic and leaderships skills to save our planet.  BRAVE is committed to creating the next generation of African leaders not only in conservation, but in business, and law, and design, and government too.    We are focusing on education because Africa has the world’s lowest secondary school enrollment rates – although 80% of children start grade one only 28% of youth are enrolled in secondary school across the continent.  In South Africa, 40% of girls drop out of school before grade eight, exposing them to risks of teen pregnancy, gansterism, drugs, unemployment, and sexual violence.  But it gets worse, Today a girl in sub-Saharan Africa has only a six percent chance of receiving some form of tertiary education.

BRAVE educates girls to enable them to navigate the challenges in their lives – sexual violence, poverty, lack of reproductive health care, climate change, patriarchy – so that tomorrow these same girls have the resilience to become our next-generation leaders, disrupting the systems that keep injustice in place and hold back entire communities. BRAVE inspires and challenges girls (and all of us) to have the courage to do the right thing, whether it be staying in school, saving our planet, speaking up against injustice, and demanding more from our current leaders.

Graca Machel has said that “individuals must find the courage to end harmful practices that impoverish girls, women and their communities.”  We cannot let half the population live in fear, because if we do, we all live in fear.  Worldwide powerful girl and women leaders have stepped forward – Malala Yousafza, Sheryl Sandberg, and Thuli Madonsela are just three examples – and millions of girls and women are breaking the silence through global campaigns like #metoo.  People across the globe are speaking up, and BRAVE believes that everyone has the courage to be part of the solution that will provide opportunities for girls.  Being BRAVE takes practice, but with enough practice we can create a culture of bravery that does not tolerate injustice or inequality in South Africa, in Africa, and across the world.

ABOUT BRAVE

BRAVE was launched in July 2016 to create a more just, equal and safe society.  BRAVE is a movement committed to providing opportunities for girls and young women to become ethical, effective leaders.  Rock Girl Road Trips and scholarships for girls to attend the ALU School of Wildlife Conservation are two of the initiatives supported by BRAVE.  In the next ten years, BRAVE will create a cohort of girl leaders across the continent, extending our network through the use of social media and technology to reach over 100,000 girls by 2027 and provide post-secondary education to 100 girl leaders by 2020.

Toasting A Year’s Collaboration With Chefs Cape Town

Chefs Cape Town, the concept eatery based in Gardens, has used Lauren Shantall Integrated Communications to manage its media relations since the launch of the restaurant in October 2016. Chefs initially opened at lunchtime only, but due to the restaurant’s success, opening hours were quickly extended to include supper as of January 2017.

Chefs celebrated its one-year anniversary in October 2017, with Lauren Shantall Integrated Communications remaining on board to launch Chefs’ new menu for summer 2017/2018.

Chefs is ideal for people who are on-the-go, solving the problem of accessing great cuisine without spending hours sitting and waiting to be served. Chefs offers an online menu that changes daily and is notable for offering only three main meal options and no starters  –  as well as one dessert. Meals are prepared by Head Chef Jenny Ward (formerly of Bizerca Bistro) and her team, and presented on a signature tray that resembles a canteen-style server.

Customers place their orders via an iPad – there are no waiters and meals are served by the chefs themselves. “We’ve stripped away all barriers between the chef and the customer, so eating here is basically like eating in my own kitchen,” says Ward. The minimal, stripped back décor and open-plan kitchen that merges with the dining area reinforces this sense.

The eatery is open Monday to Friday, from 12pm to 8.30pm. The daily menu can be viewed at www.chefscapetown.co.za.

Since mid-August 2017, Lauren Shantall Integrated Communications has arranged the media launch of the new Kat van Duinen flagship store at the V&A Waterfront’s Silo District, as well as the relaunch of its revamped ‘Essentials’ boutique at The Old Biscuit Mill in Woodstock, Cape Town.

Lauren Shantall Integrated Communications is happy to announce its second collaboration with Mulberry & Prince Kitchen and Bar. On 16 June 2017, 1500 litres of limited edition Ayama Vermentino will be auctioned at Roodebloem Studios in Woodstock, Cape Town. As the event coincides with Youth Day, proceeds will go towards Perdjie School, a kindergarten opened in 2015 in the Ayama area.

Lauren Shantall (Pty) Ltd will act as media liaison for the auction. In addition, the agency is identifying and organising the auctioneer that will preside over the event.

The ever-popular Good Food & Wine Show is an annual, three-day long culinary extravaganza held in three South African cities – Cape Town, Joburg and Durban – at three different points in the year. The event incorporates live cooking sessions by well-known chefs, displays and stalls featuring demonstrations and goods on sale, and culinary workshops.

Rock Girl creating a safe space for young women in need

Rock Girl is transforming the lives of young women across the Cape Flats and across South Africa by creating safe spaces where they can become resilient, curious and active citizens. Since 2010, over 400 girls between the ages of 11 and 18 have participated in Rock Girl after school, weekend, and holiday programmes. In 2015, Rock Girl launched the first-ever girl-led Road Trips, taking girls from some of the most dangerous communities in Cape Town across South Africa to meet other girls and find solutions to the challenges they face at school, at home, and on the streets.

DSC_1544

Each week, Rock Girl continues to run two afterschool programmes for girls in grades 5-7 in Manenberg, the Red River Rock Girl group and the Art in the Forest counselling group, but now also coordinates two groups of high school girls each week. We are incredibly proud that these Rock Girls successfully advocated for the construction of a brand new school at Red River, which was officially opened in early 2016. The new school has created a vibrant safe space for over 800 learners, and the girls’ first ever Safe Space bench has pride of place at the school. There are over 55 Safe Space benches around South Africa now, including one at Bredasdorp Magistrate Court that was installed in memory of Anene Booysens and two other young women who were raped and murdered in the area in the last two years. We are currently creating a bench in partnership with the staff at the Bay Hotel that will be unveiled later this year.

The BRAVE girl group is for girls from ten different high schools and meets at the American Corner at the Cape Town Central Library. The girls discuss local and global issues facing teenagers, meet with girls from other communities, write their own blog, and are trained as journalists to documents these stories and share them more broadly through social media and workshops. These girls can all apply to attend a Rock Girl Road Trip.

IMG_0920

In May, this group initiated the BRAVE debate on gender equality, sexual violence and its impact on teenagers today, launching the first of three meetings between Rock Girl and the Global Issues Network groups at Bishops, Herschel, Reddam, and Springfield schools. These conversations are critical and bring boys and girls together to discuss solutions to the violence that they face in their daily lives, breaking down myths and barriers between genders and communities.

The SST Khayelitsha girl group is based in a community that faces serious challenges with sanitation, sexual violence, and unemployment. These girls live near where Sinoxolo Mafevuka was raped and murdered earlier this year and are working with the Open Design Festival, along with the BRAVE girl group, to design alternative sanitation solutions in their area. These girls also receive radio reporting and photography training in preparation for potential participation in Rock Girl Road Trips. In April, Rock Girl BRAVE and SST had a day long workshop to document the problems girls face in SST and will share these with the designers working with them on solutions.

DSC_6426

In 2015, Rock Girl travelled over 2000km, to the Eastern and Northern Capes, on two innovative Road Trips.  On each trip, sixteen girls were selected to interview other girls (over 100 on each trip), share their stories, and document their common challenges. The trips were coordinated in partnership with Cape Town Tourism, Nelson Mandela Bay Tourism, and with lodges like Tswalu in the Kalahari. The theme of the first trip was art and culture, and we visited local artisans, craftspeople, and designers along the way, as well as toured the Port Elizabeth public art.  The theme of the second trip was science and we visited the telescope at Sutherland, met with researchers at Tswalu and visited health clinics. On both trips, girls wrote public service announcements and broadcast them over community radio stations, reaching thousands of girls and boys, as well as wrote daily articles for the Mail and Guardian and the Cape Times, learning first-hand the challenges of reporting on the road.

The girls who participated in these trips returned with a new lens on their lives and have met with the Minister of Justice, Michael Mashatu, the head of the Sexual Offences and Community Affairs Unit of the National Prosecuting Authority, Thoko Majokweni, and the head of the NPA, as well as the Regional Head of Justice Hishaam Mohammed, and local leaders and educators to share what they learned and advocate for changes. Additionally, they have been asked to speak at the ATTA conference in December, interviewing Colin Bell, Brad Poole of Peace Parks Foundation, and other travel experts about what they are doing to change the face of tourism in South Africa.  Some of the girls have been placed in internships in the travel industry upon their return and one of the girls regularly receives the highest marks in her school in Tourism.

IMG_2763

As part of their journalism training, the girls also learn writing and social media skills and run their own blog and are currently setting up their own youth newsletter to reach many more girls, with support from design students from CPUT and students from UCT. In October, the next group of girls will travel to Mpumalanga to work with Singita and meet girls living on the edge of Kruger National Park to discuss their challenges, and another group of girls from the Cape will travel to Limpopo to meet girls from Botswana and Ziimbabwe and create a documentary of their lives.

Rock Girl is also designing BRAVE products that the girls will help sell online and at selected retail shops around South Africa. These will include BRAVE adventure tote bags, a BRAVE perfume created by the girls in partnership with Frazer Parfum, and tshirts. In July, Southern Guild Gallery will host a dinner and BRAVE awards programme and exhibit to showcase the writing and photographs of the girls and launch these products that will help sustain our programme and provide employment opportunities for our girls.

IMG_0115

In April 2016, in response to the tragic and devastating rapes and murders of two young women, Rock Girl organised the first ever BRAVE pan-community 35km run from Khayelitsha to the Rock Girl benches at Heritage Square to raise awareness about the need for a culture of non-violence in South Africa. The girls wrote newspaper articles and spoke on the radio, creating a special show for SAfm about the event. Rock Girl partnered with the Amy Biehl Foundation, Grassroot Soccer, and Sonke Gender Justice and SAPS provided support along the way. We plan to make this an annual event due to the success of the first run and widespread media coverage and community support.

In July 2017, Rock Girl will partner with Escape +Explore to launch the first BRAVE Adventure Academy to train girls to become adventure guides. Twenty girls will spend two weeks in Cape Town learning practical skills on the mountain and listening to mentors each evening round the campfire, then will travel to Singita to participate in a week long conservation programme. The girls will be certified as Adventure Guides and some will receive internships at selected lodges around South Africa.

DSC_2294

Twelve of the girls in our high school group have been with Rock Girl for six years, since grade 5, and they are now in grade 11. They are achieving academically but more importantly, they are planning to attend university and travel post-matric, dreams which seemed impossible when they were 10 and 11 years old. Rock Girl is girl-led – we strive to give the young women we work with agency to make their own decisions about their lives. Each day, most of them must decide whether it is safe to go to school, whether to join a gang, or become teen mothers.

Every one of the girls we work with has either witnessed murders first hand, and has personal experiences of rape and sexual violence. Travel on the Road Trips has been the most impactful activity we have undertaken so far – it has opened minds and left the girls speechless, but they have returned ready to share their stories and change their lives and the lives of others. They are on the frontlines in some of the most dangerous communities in South Africa, but they are brave, confident and ambitious – Rock Girl is preparing them to become leaders in their own communities and across the country.

Over a period of four months, the company assisted with the successful launch of these unique destinations, co-located on the corner of Bree and Strand Streets in Cape Town.

Club9 showcases classic cars while Dapper Coffee Co. provides the perfect cup of coffee, a quick snack or even a lazy afternoon lunch. Mulberry & Prince

Newly established eatery, Mulberry & Prince Kitchen and Bar, situated in Cape Town’s trendy CBD, is one of the latest additions to the Lauren Shantall (Pty) Ltd client portfolio.

Mulberry & Prince, on the corner of Pepper and Bree Street, is the brainchild of born-and-bred Capetonian, Cornel Mostert, and Brooklyn native, Cynthia Rivera. The dynamic duo, who met and studied at The Culinary Institute of America in New York, combined their love of travel, cooking and Modern American cuisine to create a restaurant that is unlike any other in the Mother City.

The food at Mulberry & Prince is purposely intended for sharing. Guests are encouraged to order a few small-to-midsize plates, communally sampling a bit of each. This style of eating, which is gaining popularity in the U.S. – along with the fusion of different cultural cooking techniques and ingredients – offers a fresh perspective to Capetonian diners and one they will undoubtedly adore!

To complement the food, Adri van Zyl of Atelier Interiors designed the space with an air of understated elegance in mind. Stained glass, dirty pinks, lush velvets and an eclectic mix of custom-made and modern furniture were combined within a white gallery setting. Cape Town-based artist, Kurt Pio, finishes the space off beautifully with his modern bespoke artwork, creating a refreshingly unique dinner spot for those seeking an intimate night out or a relaxed early-evening glass of wine in the courtyard.

Senior Account Manager, Leah De Vos says: “We are thrilled to welcome this gorgeous new restaurant to our clientele list. The space is beautiful and the food is equally delicious. We are very excited to be able to assist them in their marketing and communications strategy in order to give them an advantage in the always-competitive Cape Town restaurant scene.”

Malaville Company Announcement

Malaville

Lauren Shantall (Pty) Ltd is pleased to announce the exciting addition of Malaville Toys to its client portfolio and will play an active role in bringing the Malaville brand to life through PR campaigns Malaville was established by the international fashion model, business women and doll collector, Mala Bryan – originally from St Lucia in the Caribbean, but now based in Cape Town. Malaville is described as “a place of stunning beauty and make-believe,” where dreams become a reality, where play is actively encouraged, and where one can just let go and be free. Malaville may not be a physical destination, but it is a place where creative imagination is exposed to both the young and older generations.

Mala_Dolls_2438_large

The Malaville Debut Collection is a range of dolls that brings a more diverse representation to the doll market, by introducing a variety of brown skin tones and hair curls, coils and textures. The inspiration for Mala Bryan’s vision of creating more African dolls came after she had seen the need for more curly haired black and brown dolls, at an affordable price. “I looked to expand my own doll collection as they all started looking the same to me, but realized they are not as easy to come by,” says Bryan. “We live in a world where diversity in culture, race and colour is celebrated, so why not translate that to children through playtime from an early age?”

Certain children often set aside play time with their dolls and they take it very seriously. The use of imagination is an essential part of connecting with their dolls, and this is played out through interaction between them, their dolls and their friends.

Mala doll

Mala believes that diversity in the play world can also lead to diversity in the real world. Her aim is for the dolls to have a positive impact on societies worldwide and for the Debut Collection to make it into all doll collections of both the young and the old. “I would love for adults to play with the dolls and connect with their inner child,” Bryan concludes.

More exciting developments are yet to come for the Malaville brand with this new, spectacular range of dolls. The Malaville dolls can be purchased online from www.malavilletoys.com.

Lauren Shantall partners with Martine Jackson and Galia Gluckman on “Martine & Galia Collaborate”

bronzer uforia2 twiggy2
Lauren Shantall (Pty) Ltd, an integrated communications company, proudly announces its partnership with ceramicist Martine Jackson and fine artist Galia Gluckman.  Jackson, who graduated from Michaelis School of Fine Art at the University of Cape Town in 2000, continues the creative lineage that dates back to her late grandfather, Morris Adler, a sculptor. She currently works in a ceramic studio established in 1978 by her late mother, Barbara Jackson, a well-established ceramicist who first introduced Martine to clay at the young age of five.

Gluckman on the other hand, produces large-scale, multi-faceted artworks in her medium of choice: pigment ink on cotton paper and collage. She has exhibited across the globe and her work is represented in many private and corporate collections in Australia, Dubai, Israel, South Africa, Spain, the United Kingdom and USA.

In their collaboration, both artists are evaluating equilibrium versus imbalance in modern-day life and culture. Martine demonstrates her dynamic ability to balance the tension between the structure and forms inspired by nature. Galia juxtaposes precisely ordered lines with frenetic and randomly intersecting lines in an attempt to understand the transition from order to disorder and how life is either in balance or in tension.

The collaboration includes a limited edition range of six elegant ceramic pieces distinguished by striking organic shapes and intricately detailed transfer artwork, by “Martine and Galia Collaborate”. This collaboration is a perfect fit with Lauren Shantall (Pty) Ltd’s existing list of décor, design and lifestyle clientele.
