The Business Acumen for Artists (BAA) short course at the UCT GSB teaches the basics of business so that creative professionals can elevate their art and develop a sustainable business.

Any freelance creative who is in the process of establishing a career in the field of music, digital media, design, visual arts, theatre, film or literature would benefit from this business course for artists, which also affords the opportunity to network with other creative professionals.

The course runs once a week in the evenings over 13 weeks and delegates are further supported by six months of mentoring. As the course unfolds, delegates will gain key business skills – from how to manage their finances to negotiating decisively when pitching a product and pricing an idea.

This is a profound and practical investment for artists and creative professionals who will emerge more clear and confident about their creative aspirations and be much better equipped to work creatively.

Lauren Shantall was invited by course facilitator Lianne Burton to participate in the Mentorship Programme that supports the Business Acumen for Artists (BAA) course at the UCT Graduate School of Business.

“I feel very humbled by the opportunity to assist someone else’s business journey,” Lauren says. “I am sure that the process will provide ample learning for both parties! I salute the BAA for the inclusion of Mentorship in its programme.”

Over the course of 6 months, Lauren will be on hand to provide insight and encouragement to help her Mentee realise their entrepreneurial and creative potential. She will also help them to crystalise and refine their creative offering.
